Group Therapy
When it comes to seeking out treatment for any psychological difficulty, you may wonder if it would be helpful to attend group therapy. There are many benefits to attending a group, and in many cases, group therapy can be just as helpful as individual therapy. Some of the advantages to group therapy are listed below.
Validation
A major benefit of group therapy is validation. By being in a group with a number of people struggling with the same problem, you can see that you are not alone in your struggles.
You Can Help Others
Just as you can learn from others, your experiences in coping may also benefit other people in the group.
Learning From Others
Another benefit of group therapy is being able to learn from the experiences of others. You can hear about what coping strategies other people found to be effective and what coping strategies were not effective. You may also learn new ways of addressing a problem in your relationships or at work. By being in a group, you can be exposed to other perspectives on your problems that you may have never considered.
Social SupportFinally, group therapy provides an excellent way of receiving social support from others. It has been determined over and over again that finding support from others can be a major factor in helping people overcome the negative effects of a traumatic event. A group setting can provide you with the opportunity to develop supportive, trusting, and healthy relationships with other people.
Groups are facilitated by 2 experienced members of the Recover Australia mental health team and include Mental Health Nurses, Mental Health Occupational Therapist and Mental Health Social Workers. They run for 6 weeks and included worksheets
The new timetable for the next term will Include groups focusing on:
Depression & Anxiety
Depression and anxiety affects 1 in 5 Australians. Our group
therapy program for depression and anxiety develops strategies so participants
can recognise symptoms, respond positively, make changes and maintain healthy
lifestyles using CBT based strategies.
Achieving Better Sleep
As many as 1 in 5 adults do not get as much sleep as they
would like. This can result in feeling tired during the day, becoming
irritable, having difficulty concentrating or getting on with your usual
activities. Difficulty sleeping is likely to make your depressed mood
even worse. This group program will provide education about sleep and its
importance and will provide techniques that will promote and develop health
sleeping patterns.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
PTSD can be a distressing and isolating illness. Group
therapy helps you build relationships with others who understand what you've
been through. You learn to deal with emotions such as shame, guilt, anger,
rage, and fear. Sharing with the group can also help you build self-confidence
and trust. You'll learn to focus on your present life, rather than feeling
overwhelmed by the past.
Managing Anger
Anger management is about understanding your anger and why
it happens. It is about learning and practising better ways of expressing
anger, and knowing how to prevent it from occurring in the first place.
Specifically, anger management is about knowing the triggers and early warning
signs of anger, and learning techniques to calm down and manage the situation
before it gets out of control.
How can I manage on my budget?
Managing a budget successfully can be a daunting and
difficult task at times. Often we have never been shown the tools needed to
maintain control on our finances and often symptoms of mental illness can make
this even harder to address. This group program offers participants useful and practical knowledge about different
budgeting tools and participants will leave with the confidence to start
managing their budget successfully.
What does it mean now I’m a carer?
Becoming a carer can be a frightening and isolating
experience. Often carers don't realise they're a carer until someone else
points it out. This group program allows carers to explore the emotions that
this role evokes and allows people to share their experiences, learning and
gaining support from other carers. We
will also develop coping strategies and
explore skills to promote healthy wellbeing.
Good communication and relationships at any age
Good communication is an important element of healthy and
fulfilling relationships. However, at times of stress communication can
breakdown and it can often be difficult
to rebuild when we feel we have lost our way. This group program gives
participants the knowledge and skills to recognise what good and bad
communication is, how to promote good communication and how maintain healthy
relationships.
Time for change?
Change does not happen in one step. Rather, people tend to
progress through different stages on their way to successful change. Also, each
of us progresses through the stages at our own rate. Our group focuses on
developing an understanding of change and how we can each move through the 6
stages successfully providing a toolkit for each participant.
All of our groups provide participants with the
opportunity to learn useful information and receive encouraging practical
strategies to help them further their understanding of their mental illness.
This takes place in a regular, supportive environment with two experienced
facilitators. Weekly worksheets will be provided and guest speakers with
special expertise will sometimes attend to offer their knowledge and advice.
Groups will run for 6 weeks and we can see those with a mental health care plan or without for $20 per week
